DVD
Region Encoding There are currently 6 global region codes that identify
specific DVDs that are compatible with the players typically sold in that region.
The majority of all current titles play in only one specific region unless otherwise
noted. Multi-region players are available, but certain discs will only
play on 'their region' machines - take care when buying internationally
These are the six regions: - U.S., U.S. Territories, Canada, and Bermuda
- Japan, Europe, South Africa, and the Middle East, including Egypt
- Southeast
Asia, East Asia, including Hong Kong
- Australia, New Zealand, Pacific
Islands, Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean
- Former
Soviet Union, Indian subcontinent, Africa, North Korea, and Mongolia
- China
TV
RegionsIt is not enough to know your DVD Region - when playing 'foreign'
discs, you also need a compatible TV; for example, US and Japan use the NTSC standard,
while Europe and Australia use PAL ... most TVs will play either standard - an
imported TV almost certainly will ... but a local-made TV may only play the local
TV standard. Always check before importing. BootlegsBootleg
DVDs are getting increasingly common, but the quality varies significantly, and
some will simply not play at all - others are actually VCDs, not DVD at all. DVD
prices are competitive, and most movies are available - or will be soon - from
reputatble sources. So beware of illegal merchants. 2UBE does not recommend,
advise or deal in illegal discs - we simply describe them
