Series
GuideReviewIn four series and
a few 'specials', the story is told of one of Britains most illustrious dynasties,
the Blackadders. The tone vairies a bit from series to series, but as the
Blackadder is a different family member each time, that is forgiveable. The
scripts are strong, with Curtis' ability to provide a rounded story combined with
Elton's ability to make characters come to life, and be naturally funny. Casting
of the lead characters has been excellent, Blackadder being the high point of
Rowan Atkinson's career, and single-handedly raising Tony Robinson to Hero of
Comedy status - something he has continued within the New Labour party with some
success. Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry have played a variey of roles and have
never disappointed, while Miranda Richardson and Tim McInnerny have shone while
playing against type. A plethora of cameos has added depth and richness,
from Rik Mayall's Flasheart to Jim Broadbent's Don Speckingleesh, with Vincent
Hanna and Nigel Planer appearing convincingly as themselves. My only regret
is that they never did a series set in the city, with Blackadder as a get rich
quick yuppy, and Baldrick in the post room - limitless possibilities for cunning
plans! This set has pretty well everything you could wish for - what are
you waiting for? |
