Five
hundred years into the future, technology has moved on, weapons are sophisticated,
communication is efficient and easy, freedom reigns. For
the comfortably off, anyway. For many just surviving
is the order of the day, and Joss Whedon has set his 'anti Star trek' series among
the underclasses, those for whom respect matters - but respect for the law comes
a poor second. Often described as a 'Space Western',
the series certainly shows some elements of the old west - courage, a frontier
spirit and er, horses. No wonder that Fox lost
confidence very early on, leading to a scheduling disaster and slow audience uptake.
There was no way that the show would instantly take off - it was too 'different'
for that. And short-termism rules these days in network TV. Fifteen
hours of TV were filmed, just 12 were screened. Joss
Whedon was not to be outdone, however, and touted the series around the other
networks without success, before proposing a feature film to tell the untold stories. The
movie got made, and is now available on DVD:
